Eye Examination

At Houston Pierce Optical we will diagnose, treat, and assess ocular health as well as determine if vision correction is needed.

Annual eye exams are recommended as a part of preventative health care. Individuals can be unaware of problems because there are often no obvious signs or symptoms. It is important to detect and treat vision problems early in order to maintain good vision and eye health.

A typical eye exam with us may include:

  • Patient History – checks your general health, medication usage, family history and symptoms, etc.
  • Visual Acuity – will evaluate how clearly each of your eyes are seeing. Normal distance visual acuity is 20/20, meaning you see clearly at the appropriate distance.
  • Preliminary Tests – to evaluate specific aspects of visual function and eye health.
  • Keratometry – to measure the curvature of your cornea, the clear outer surface of the eye. This is important for determining the “base curve” of contact lenses if needed.
  • Refraction – determines the appropriate lens power to compensate for nearsightedness, farsightedness, or astigmatism.
  • Eye Focusing, Eye Teaming, and Eye Movement Testing – measures accommodation, ocular motility, and binocular vision to determine how well your eyes function individually and together.
  • Eye Coordination – accesses the ability of both your eyes to work together. The brain fuses the images each of your eyes sees in order to create one clear picture. Eye coordination is a developed skill and done properly, keeps the eyes in proper alignment. Poor eye coordination is often successfully treated with eyeglasses or the correction of other eye conditions, such as nearsightedness and farsightedness.
  • Eye Health Evaluation – to examine the external parts of your eye, including the cornea, eyelids, conjunctiva and surrounding eye tissue. In addition, the your pupils may be dilated to evaluate the internal parts of your eye, including the lens, retina and posterior section. Doctors may also measure the pressure within each eye in order to detect glaucoma.
  • Supplemental Testing – our staff may do additional testing to confirm or rule out possible problems, and to provide clarification or further assessment of your vision needs.
